In a rare but not impossible occasion, the 9th of May 2024 in Luxembourg will be a double public holiday. Both Europe Day and Ascension Thursday will be celebrated. But how does this work for employees?
The law of the 8th of February 2024 is here to regulate this situation!
Several possibilities may then arise:
- Employees who usually work on Thursdays will be entitled to both a non-working public holiday and a compensatory day off to be taken within 3 months of this Thursday.
- Employees who do not usually work on this Thursday (for example, because they have their weekly day off) will be entitled to 2 compensatory days off to be taken within 3 months.
- For employees who are required to work on this day (for example, in catering), it is then provided that these employees are entitled to a compensatory day off to be taken within 3 months, as well as the usual salary increases.
Overall, the good news is that no rights are lost. Don’t hesitate to check your payslips and holiday balance if in doubt.
