Echternach
Echternach is one of the oldest and most historic cities in Luxembourg, located in the east of the country, near the border with Germany. Founded in 698 by Saint Willibrord, an Anglo-Saxon missionary, it is famous for its Benedictine abbey, which played a central role in the religious and cultural history of the region.
The city is also known for its dancing procession, a unique event listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. This procession, which takes place every year on Whit Tuesday, attracts thousands of visitors who come to take part in this centuries old religious tradition. Participants dance through the streets, accompanied by songs and prayers, in homage to Saint Willibrord.
Echternach enjoys an exceptional natural setting, nestled in the Little Switzerland region of Luxembourg. The city is surrounded by hills, forests and rock formations, making it a popular starting point for hiking and outdoor activities. The nearby Lake Echternach is a popular place for leisure activities such as canoeing, cycling and picnics.
Architecturally, Echternach retains a medieval charm, with its narrow streets, old houses and its abbey, which today contains a museum dedicated to the life of Saint Willibrord. The historic centre of the city is also dotted with remarkable monuments such as the Basilica of Saint Willibrord and the Episcopal Palace, testifying to the religious and cultural importance of the city.
With its unique mixture of history, culture and nature, Echternach is a must-see destination for heritage enthusiasts and nature lovers, offering a rich insight into Luxembourg’s history in a picturesque setting.
