Each EU member state has its own national rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is worth noting that <strong>purchased periods are recorded in your career statement<\/strong> and are therefore recognized abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Buying Your Study Periods in Belgium<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may be beneficial to buy your <strong>study periods in Belgium<\/strong> so that they are taken into account for the calculation of your pension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Belgium, unlike in some other countries, you can <strong>only buy your study periods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Buying periods in Belgium <strong>does not affect your early retirement date<\/strong>; it can only be used to <strong>increase the amount of your pension<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the <strong>cost of the buy-back contribution<\/strong> depends on the time you submit your request relative to the date of obtaining your last diploma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy back the <strong>entire period<\/strong> for which you obtained the diploma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost of buying back your periods is <strong>\u20ac1,902.39 per 12-month period<\/strong> (2025 amount) if you purchase within <strong>10 years after finishing your studies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-eures-plugin-accordion-block\"><div class=\"accordion-top\"><p class=\"accordion-title\">Eligible Periods<\/p><svg viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"accordion-top__icon\"><path d=\"M3 12L21 12M21 12L12.5 3.5M21 12L12.5 20.5\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>You can buy back the following <strong>study periods<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Complete years of higher education<\/strong> (university or non-university, technical, professional, maritime, or artistic) during which you completed a full cycle and obtained a diploma.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Doctoral periods<\/strong>, only if you obtained your doctorate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Professional internships<\/strong>, if:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A diploma was required to undertake the internship,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You obtained a recognized professional qualification after the internship,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The internship has <strong>not already been counted<\/strong> for pension calculation in Belgium or abroad (for example, paid internships such as those for becoming a medical specialist <strong>cannot be bought back<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apprenticeship periods<\/strong> from age 18, if they are <strong>not counted<\/strong> for a Belgian or foreign pension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complete years of secondary education<\/strong> after the 6th year of secondary school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, you <strong>cannot buy back study periods<\/strong> for which you did not obtain a diploma, doctorate, or professional qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, if you hold <strong>multiple diplomas, professional qualifications, or equivalent doctorates<\/strong>, you <strong>cannot buy back all of them<\/strong> and must make a choice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-eures-plugin-accordion-block\"><div class=\"accordion-top\"><p class=\"accordion-title\">How to Apply<\/p><svg viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"accordion-top__icon\"><path d=\"M3 12L21 12M21 12L12.5 3.5M21 12L12.5 20.5\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Use the <strong>simulator on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mypension.be\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mypension.be<\/a><\/strong> to estimate the impact of buying back periods on your pension. You can also <strong>carry out the buy-back directly via this platform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can submit your request in writing using this form: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfpd.fgov.be\/files\/1118\/regulsal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Request for Adjustment of Study Periods for Employees<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The request <strong>must be submitted before the date your pension begins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reviewing your request, the administration will inform you of the <strong>amount of contributions<\/strong> for the study periods you can buy back, and you will communicate your choice to proceed or not.
